A Brussels-born artist, Alexandra De Grave regularly exhibits in Europe, Asia, and the USA. She came to painting through unconventional paths, with the creative process being for her an ardent ‘inner necessity.’ After an intense gestural work, a profusion of vivid and radiant colors comes to life on the canvas, serving as barriers against darkness.
These large, vibrant, and poetic canvases express the strength of life and a fierce rejection of any determinism or fatalism. They are akin to an act of resistance. The central theme of Alexandra De Grave’s work lies in the technique of ‘touches’ and the dialogue between colors and light, in a constant search for rhythm and balance on the edge of imbalance.
The use of transparency explores the richness of what is hidden but can be glimpsed. Everything is suggested, allowing our imagination to take part of the journey. Alexandra De Grave’s painting takes us beyond appearances, into a sensitive, lively, and intimately joyful universe.
When asked about her work, the artist likes to quote E. Hopper: “If you could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint”.
